This green water in Windermere is caused by sewage.
Yesterday I spoke to the Chief Executive of the @lakedistrictnpa, Richard Leaf. We discussed the worsening quality of water in Windermere. 70% of the phosphate load currently decimating it ecologically is linked to sewage.
This is what I expect.
I want an action plan to be produced change needs happen urgently to help save Windermere.
I want collaboration from those that should be protecting Windermere including the National Park.
I want innovation to help solve issues in a time when climate change is creating unprecedented complications.
Most importantly I want big investment. This will stop and reverse the damage that has been done.
This is my dog Bo in this photo, she would die if she swallowed any of that water. I have a written statement from a gentleman that contracted campylobacter from the lake in 2020 and I am seeing wildlife die which is what I care most about as a Zoologist.
This war against pollution in the Lake District is not over but a very important battle between stakeholders is about to commence in which the future of Windermere will be determined. I will be there and expect a date for when we will see the most pristine waters and freshwater habitats in the National Park.
This could not have been achieved without you. Every single person that has supported, shared and signed the campaign in any form has helped make this step in the right direction. We haven’t won yet but it’s about time for some hesitant optimism. (But don’t celebrate until we get signatures on a piece of paper)
This is solely a social media campaign and so any shares on Instagram and Twitter are critical in keeping the momentum going. I can be found on social media @mattstaniek
