The Issue

During my travels to Greece, a place well-known for its warm hospitality and profound historical influence on modern society, I have always had a deep appreciation for the country’s contributions to philosophy, the arts, and sciences.

As an Irish/UK citizen, the joy I experience while visiting this enchanting country is partly attributed to the enduring legacy of its ancient cultures. However, each visit to the Acropolis in Athens brings with it a sense of loss. The Parthenon is not fully complete, because vital pieces of its history are on display  at the British Museum in London.

The Parthenon Marbles, commonly referred to as the Elgin Marbles, were removed in the early 19th century under controversial  circumstances. This has been a source of sorrow and national pride for many, especially for the Greek people, who view the Marbles as an integral part of their cultural heritage.

The rightful home of these artifacts is Greece, and it is essential that they are returned.

Repatriating these sculptures not only honors Greece's rich cultural heritage but reinforces the bonds of friendship and mutual respect between the UK and Greece. Greece has made its stance clear over the years, consistently requesting the return of these pieces, and has even creating a modern, state-of-the-art facility at the Acropolis Museum, ready to house these treasures in a setting befitting their historical  collections. Returning the Parthenon Marbles would not merely be an act of goodwill but an act of justice.

Please join me in urging the UK Government to recognize the importance of returning the Parthenon Marbles to their original home. Let us rectify this historical discrepancy and promote the restoration of profound cultural heritage. Sign this petition to voice your support for this crucial cause and to help reunify a vital part of Greece's historic legacy with its rightful place at the Acropolis.
