I've signed Usman's petition to the Met Office to name UK storms after the fossil fuel companies responsible for them - i'd like to encourage you to do the same.
The practice of giving names to identity weather events goes back hundreds of years. A storm will be named when it has the potential to affect the issuing of an amber 'be prepared' or a red 'take action' warning. Other weather events might warrant naming, especially snow or rain if the Environmental Agency, SEPA or Natural Resources Wales issue a flood warning.
Storm naming competitions have been run in the UK since 2015 and appear to be a popularity contest for gendered names that represent the culture and identity of the UK and Ireland. But these events are increasingly endangering our cultures, should we keep calling them after folk tale characters?
Naming the big polluters would be taking the important issue of severe weather events as seriously as it needs to be and make sure these companies names are as well known as the damage their profits are causing.
A map from the decolonial atlas shows a mere 100 companies are responsible for over 70% of carbon emission since 1988. Some of the catchiest, in alphabetical order: Arch Coal, BP, Cloud Peak, Devon Energy, Ecopetrol.
This petition is a great opportunity to make a very public correlation between high emitters and climate chaos, generating engagement and public pressure to name the culprits, tell the truth and act congruously as if that truth mattered.
