#where is your plan

Nov 13, 2019 —

There is little doubt left that we are living through times of extreme climate.

With Doncaster flooded, tourists wadding through Venice and New South Wales in a state of disaster over escalating catastrophic fires, today is a reminder that climate chaos is the new norm.

The Climate Central coastal screening tool shows what 2050 could look like for coastal communities in many areas of this country and across the world. Continuing to project targets into the distant future is not safe.

We need action now. The government’s own Committee on Climate Change describe the current plans to protect people from heatwaves, flash flooding and other impacts of the climate crisis as shockingly inadequate.

In spite of claims that we are a leading light in the climate emergency process the UK has only fully delivered on one single policy out of the 25 emission reduction policies the CCC stipulated were required to keep us safe. We need urgent action if we are to meet targets and we also need new policies to delivered change faster.

My colleague Paul's petition for a UK-wide Climate Emergency Action Plan has just reached another milestone; please keep signing and sharing.

Whether you support Extinction Rebellion's tactics or not, #whereisyourplan echoes the feelings of concerned people across the world. We are part of a global movement and we are gaining momentum. This is not unreasonable. This is the only way to respond to science fiction becoming current affairs. In the words of Jacinta Arden, PM of NZ "we have to start moving beyond signs of hope and deliver signs action."

Thank you for all that you do. Together we can turn the tide.
