The petition to reduce the use of bird deterrent spikes on buildings in the UK has passed 32,000 signatures. Thanks to people like you!
If together we can get it to 35,000 signatures it will be one of the most popular petitions in the UK.
I recently saw a poor Herring Gull dangling dead from a roof top caught by a strip of spiked bird deterrents. I questioned why don’t we value our roof top birds more. That’s why I started the petition.

Why is stopping the death or injury of a few birds on roofs important?
A really important science led report came out this week. We all know that the climate and biodiversity crises will affect us worldwide. Connecting the spheres of climate and biodiversity it seems is crucial, even in our towns and cities.
Today’s featured image of a Herring Gull is shared with kind permission from ©Maït Foulkes. She kindly offered to support the petition campaign with some brilliant donated images of roof top birds.
The peer reviewed report from the world’s leading climate and biodiversity experts (the IPCC met with the IPBES) has made clear the interconnectedness of the biodiversity crisis and climate crisis. It suggested a number of key actions are needed to fight both fronts at once.
As Norway’s Climate and Environment minister, Sveinung Rotevatn said about the two crises ‘- we either solve both or we solve neither.’ Our lives depend on this...
Scientists agree that rapid cuts in fossil fuel burning are essential. Restoring and protecting nature will boost biodiversity and the ecosystems & can thankfully quickly and & cheaply absorb carbon.
We know nature rubs up against society in cities. Every small & helpful thing we do will contribute to mitigate against these two mega crises. The report notes that every local nature-based biodiversity solution in our cities and towns matter, since they accumulate together on a global level. Doing positive social tipping interventions such as for example changing public & industry behaviours, social norms or engaging civil society in co-designing & implementing plans and strategies across sectors will lead to social-ecological resilience. That is; we all live better!

Society has for too long decided roof top birds are pests rather than them often being (even international) players of importance in the complex web of nature & climate. We know many species are being affected by climate change’s effect on our oceans, irregular breeding season weather changes or by local or international habitat loss.
It is time to welcome and encourage birds to our roofs rather than deter them. Ways forward can be identified with discussion & care to offer better solutions than are there now. We accepted that bird spikes for example are supposedly ‘humane’ yet know they cause deaths and injuries. Stretched across the whole country the effect is likely to be in the thousands. That’s why it matters.
In the face of the joint crises of climate and biodiversity let's decide that killing or injuring of roof top dwelling birds can be avoided. Society should make doubly sure that installation of bird deterrents including bird spikes & netting is used only in extreme circumstances, at the right time & is of the most appropriate design.
Planet saving urban nature deserves our attention.
Building Back Better
Building back better can now be about welcoming feathered biodiversity to the roofs of our homes and offices with enhanced education, reducing the use of bird deterrents, better pest control operator licensing, appropriate planning controls & better funding for wildlife crime teams and prosecution.
This petition calls upon the Welsh and UK Governments to urgently review & take steps to stop the killing and injuring of birds across the U.K. due to the use of bird deterrents.
