Thanks to supporter’s helpful comments the petition to reduce the use of bird deterrent spikes on buildings in the UK will now be broadened out to both the Welsh Government and UK Government in order to aim for success. The petition is heading towards 35,000 signatures which will make it one of the most popular petitions in the UK.

I recently saw a poor Herring Gull dangling dead from a roof top caught by a strip of spiked bird deterrents. I questioned why don’t we value our roof top birds more.  I felt I must do something. That’s why I started the petition.

Please help right now by signing and sharing the petition with your friends to get it landing high and dry? #Nature  #birds  #NoToBirdSpikes  #JustWhoisTrespassing  #LetTheBirdsFly

The climate crisis and biodiversity crisis will affect us worldwide. One small thing we can surely start doing is to welcome and encourage birds to our roofs rather than deter them. Humans have already built over or destroyed a good deal of habitat space from wildlife already. Isn’t it time to change our perceptions of whose land or roof top perch that is? Planet saving nature deserves a look in too. Just who is doing the trespassing?

The photo in the link shows how birds can get their wings or feet caught and die because of unnecessary cruel bird deterrent spike strips on buildings. The roof top dwelling birds contribute to our planet’s biodiversity and play a major role in the rich ecology of the urban and rural areas we live in. Some of these roof top perching bird species even have super smart brains and more importantly many are endangered.

Many are being affected by climate change’s effect on our oceans or by local or international habitat loss and irregular breeding season weather changes. Every little bit we as people can do to reduce unnecessary bird deaths can help stop possible extinction.

Remember to please share the petition (copy and paste) using either of the petition links with friends and on social media. Ask people to please sign and share the petition themselves. If you’ve already been so kind as to have already shared why not share again. Your post may find people at a more convenient time. #Nature  #birds  #NoToBirdSpikes  #JustWhoisTrespassing  #LetTheBirdsFly

Birds don’t deserve to die because of these ill placed cruel bird deterrent measures. Help stop the killing or injuring of birds who simply want a place to land and thrive.

Just Who is Trespassing?

Today’s featured wonderful image is of a Herring Gull shared with kind permission from ©Maït Foulkes. She has kindly offered to support the petition campaign with some brilliant donated images of roof top birds.
We need a public discussion on how us humans welcome and respect nature on our homes and offices not just in conservation areas or on the oceans, rivers and natural habitats that surround us.

Simply having a gull, pigeon or bird of prey perching on your roof and squawking excitedly is not a reason to cause their death with such deterrents. The use of any deterrent measures needs to be more nuanced and more appropriate so as not to cause injury or death.

A review of pest control operator licensing and the deterrent methods these operators and house owners are allowed to use is urgently needed to protect our wildlife more effectively in the face of the climate crisis coupled with increased support and funding for wildlife crimedetection and prosecution.

Building Back Better

Building back better could now be about welcoming feathered biodiversity to the roofs of our homes and offices with enhanced education, reducing the use of bird deterrents, appropriate planning controls and better funding for wildlife crime teams.

The petition calls upon the U.K. Government to urgently review and take steps to stop the killing and injuring of birds across the U.K. due to the use of bird deterrents.
