The petition to reduce the use of bird deterrent spikes on buildings in the UK has been making good gains this week. Thanks to everyone’s  help it has passed 31,000 signatures! Can we get it towards 35,000 so it will be one of the most popular petitions in the UK?

I recently saw a poor Herring Gull dangling dead from a roof top caught by a strip of spiked bird deterrents. I felt I must do something. That’s why I started the petition.

Please help right now by signing and sharing the petition with your friends to get it landing high and dry?

The climate crisis and biodiversity crisis will affect us worldwide. One small thing we can surely start doing is to welcome and encourage birds to our roofs rather than deter them. We have after all taken over a good deal of space from wildlife already. Isn’t it time to change our perceptions of whose land or handy perch this is? Just who is trespassing?

The photo in the link shows how birds can get their wings or feet caught and die because of unnecessary cruel bird deterrent spike strips on buildings. These birds contribute to our planet’s biodiversity and play their part often in rich ecology of the areas we live in. Some of these roof top perching bird species even have super smart brains and more importantly many are endangered.

Many are being affected by climate change’s effect on our oceans or by local or international habitat loss and irregular breeding season weather changes. Every little bit we as people can do to reduce unnecessary bird deaths can help stop possible extinction.

Remember to share the petition (copy and paste) using either of the petition links with friends and on social media. Ask people to please sign and share the petition themselves. If you’ve already been so kind as to have already shared why not share again. Your post may find people at a more convenient time.

Birds don’t deserve to die because of these ill placed cruel bird deterrent measures. Help stop the killing or injuring of birds who simply want a place to land and thrive.

Just Who is Trespassing?

This week’s wonderful image is of an Artic Tern shared with kind permission from  ©Maït Foulkes. He has kindly offered to support the petition campaign with some brilliant donated images of roof top birds.

The Artic Tern is not really a regular rooftop perching bird. The image is though a good advert for opening a discussion on how us humans welcome and respect nature on our homes and offices.

The species is amber listed meaning it is currently subject to moderate declines in its population. The species migrates to and fro between the Artic summer and the Antarctic summer in a 20,000 mile journey taking just under 3 months. They see more daylight than any other animal on Earth. Breeding on north and west coasts especially in Scotland and Ireland their numbers are dependent on sand eel populations which are themselves potentially affected by climate change. Its worth noting that
since 2011 in Scotland seabird, numbers and breeding success have been stable although their abundance has declined by 38% since 1986.

More of your bird photos for this campaign would be much appreciated if you feel like donating them. Please contact me personally by Facebook Messenger if you are willing to donate any shareable images to help get this campaign buzzing. Thank you so much.
