Great news! The petition to reduce the use of bird deterrent spikes on buildings has now excelled the recent target of 2000 standing now close to 3500!  Can you help get the petition to an even more powerful 5000?

Share the petition with your friends to get it flying faster.

The photo in the links show birds can get caught and die because of unnecessary cruel bird deterrent spike strips on buildings. Find out below just how long some of these birds can live given the chance.

I recently saw a poor Herring Gull dangling dead from a roof top caught by a strip of spiked bird deterrents. I felt I must do something. That’s why I started the petition.

Help ensure that rooftop birds such as the stunning and now endangered Herring Gull featured in this update (Photo by kind permission of Debbie Geraghty and taken in the beautiful fishing town of Looe in Cornwall).

Birds don’t deserve to die because of these ill placed cruel bird deterrent measures. Help stop the killing birds such as the Herring Gull who simply want a place to land and thrive.

Just how long do are super smart rooftop birds live?

The British Trust for Ornithology recent summary of ringing totals gave some excellent longevity records as a result of bird ringing of our feathered friends.

The now endangered Herring Gull species featured in this update can live long given a chance without cruel bird deterrent spikes and other hazards. A bird ringed in Sussex was still spotted alive at Clydach (Swansea) 32 years and 9 months later!

Thanks to the BTO and hard-working bird ringers here are the figures for other typical rooftop perching or nesting birds.

Magpie 21yrs, Jackdaw 18yrs, Kittiwake 28yrs, Black Headed Gull 32, Wood Pigeon 17 yrs
Swallow 11yrs, Swift 17yrs

Oh and our friendly Oystercatcher from a previous update can live to 41yrs!

Last week in my update I reported how birds such as corvids (crow family), pigeons, gull and owls are as cognitively capable as monkeys and even apes. The study cited showed crows are capable of thinking about their own thoughts as they work out problems. The level of self-awareness signifies higher intelligence that only humans and perhaps a few other mammals possess.

A crow knows what a crow knows, and so it may be the case that they are sentient beings.
In other words the type of higher intelligence crows exhibit is similar to the way humans solve problems. The crows on our roofs it turns out, file away relevant knowledge and then explore these filed banks of ‘known information” to arrive at a thought through action or solution.
