The Issue

Imagine being told that a small detail of your uniform matters more than your education. Across the UK, many schools still have uniform policies that place different expectations on boys and girls, often enforcing stricter rules on one group than another. Schools should be places where students are valued for their effort, character, and achievements—not judged by whether their uniform fits outdated ideas about gender.

Today, I will argue that sexist dress codes and uniform policies have no place in modern schools. They can reinforce harmful stereotypes, unfairly target certain students, and distract from what education is really about: learning. It is time for schools to adopt fair, inclusive uniform policies that treat all students equally.

A study of 40 schools found that over 70% of schools had clothing policies that treated girls differently such as stricter rules or not being allowed to wear trousers. (Source : ResearchGate) This is unacceptable. Why are girls being treated as sexual objects in what is supposed to be a safe environment? We are more than ‘distractions’.  We are more than our skirt length or the makeup we wear.

Additionally, why are people more angry about length of my skirt the grown adults who are ‘uncomfortable’ or unable to have me in school or classrooms without getting a longer skirt? Upper thighs are not a sexual organ and, therefore, their argument is invalid. I am not dressing like a slut, you are thinking like a rapist. Why should girls be treated differently to boys when it comes to the way we dress? W You can look at any schools dress code or rules and in nearly every school the girls always have more rules than the boys when it comes to how we dress.

Why should makeup or coloured hair affect our education? I have seen first hand girls pulled out of lessons to take their makeup off. These ridiculous rules are the ones making us miss learning opportunities. Schools tell us to express ourselves, be unique, when in reality they’re not letting us express ourselves at all.

Schools cannot call themselves diversity friendly with these rules in place. By signing this petition, you are helping to change schools for the better in a more inclusive, safe environment.
