Trigger Warning : Sexual assault

"I was groped thrice by a group of men inside that crowd and when I screamed they laughed."
This happened in an educational institution in our country, a women's college. Let that sink in. Students of Delhi's Gargi College were groped, harassed, and molested by a large group of "drunken men" who barged into their college premises on February 6 during a college festival. 

It boils my blood to hear this from a girl, from a student in my country. I ask you - we ask the authorities - what is the plight of women safety in India's educational institutions? Is this how we execute Beti Bachao Beti Padhao?

The students have shared in viral posts how the men, who were outsiders, broke into the college and groped the students, locked them in washrooms and even misbehaved with them.

What happened to the students is repulsive, dangerous and so wrong. This is blatant lawlessness. This is safety compromised; this is uncurbed violence.

What action has the college taken? What did the Internal Complaints Committee do, a cell that is supposed to work to ensure the safety of its students? Adding to the disturbing inaction, the college also displayed shocking apathy when, on receiving complaints, they insensitively told students 'to not attend college festivals if they are "so scared about safety"'.

As of now, no one has been held accountable for the assualt, inaction or apathy yet.

Let's ask them today. Whom are students to turn to for help in a system that is designed to protect those in power, those with authority; in a system that has been repeatedly failing our students, especially women? We have systems, mechanism, and legislations to protect; but what good are they if of no avail when needed?

Help more voices reach the college authorities, University Grants Commission, and the HRD Ministry to speak up, to act, to rectify situations, and hold universities accountable for the safety of its students.
