UCLA Students Demand Accountability for Harmful Conduct of [Redacted] in [Redacted]

The Issue

Students as well as teaching assistants at UCLA have been directly affected by the hostile and unstable learning environment we collectively feel Professor [Redacted] has created. Many students have been left fearing for their academic standing due to what we feel is an unclear and unreasonable grading scale, emotional bias, and retaliatory behavior. She has appeared to have falsely reported students to the dean, allegedly infiltrated student group chats by posing as a fellow classmate, and as a result, seems to target individuals based on what we believed were private conversations. Rather than maintaining a focus on course quality, she appears to be more fixated on monitoring and punishing, leaving students anxious and afraid to speak out.

When a student’s integrity is unfairly questioned, the consequences can be detrimental to their learning career. Affecting factors such as GPA, academic standing, and future learning/graduate school admission, should students choose to pursue those opportunities. We, the students, believe Professor [Redacted] has made a habit of undermining students’ right to learn in a safe environment, using misconduct claims as weapons, which are often timed right before finals or during summer breaks. Her actions, if truly so, would infringe on students’ freedom of speech and academic success, as well as taking a toll on their mental well-being. Such actions have impacted not only students’ success in her course, but in their overall academic lives.

This pattern of behavior has been overlooked and has persisted for far too long. It is time to break the silence. As students who have worked hard to be at such an esteemed institution, to face being labeled as dishonest is devastating to our credibility and reputation. This would tarnish the way we are perceived by not only the university but by future professors and institutions. We maintain our innocence, we affirm our upholding of academic integrity, and that we are hardworking students who deserve to learn without fear of retaliation and harmful claims. We call on current and former students who have been affected by Professor [Redacted] to come forward with their stories and help protect future students from similar harm. Every quarter she remains teaching, more students are put at risk. UCLA must take meaningful action. Continued inaction sends the message that the rights and voices of students do not matter. We demand accountability and transparency, as well as a commitment to protecting the welfare of students.
