Dear Members of the UCC Community,
We are asking students, parents, alumni, and staff to take a moment to write to UCC leadership and the Board to request a formal, school-wide communication regarding the ownership, governance, and access policies for the indoor and outdoor tennis courts located on UCC property.
At present, there is widespread confusion and growing concern about why members of the UCC community do not have priority access to facilities that appear to be school assets, while a private tennis club with no formal affiliation to the school publicly claims ownership and control of these courts on its website.
This raises serious questions about transparency and stewardship.
UCC is an institution with a massive endowment and an active capital campaign, built on trust, donor confidence, and clear governance. Against that backdrop, it is deeply troubling that:
-There has been no school-wide communication explaining who owns these courts
-There has been no disclosure of how or by whom agreements with B&R Tennis Club were made
-Students, families, and alumni are routinely denied access, even when willing to pay hourly court fees
-A non-affiliated organization publicly presents these courts as its own
Most concerning are the real impacts on students. There have been situations where UCC student-athletes had nowhere to train, while their opponents—representing other schools—were able to practice on UCC courts because they belong to B&R Tennis Club. This is unacceptable and fundamentally misaligned with UCC’s mission.
In addition, we ask the school to actively consider the future:
Would you be interested in increasing racquet sport offerings for UCC families and alumni? Tennis and pickleball are extremely popular lifetime sports and a powerful way for alumni to stay connected to the school. It is highly disappointing that facilities with this potential are not being used properly for the UCC community.
We are asking for clarity, accountability, and fairness.
Our request is simple:
Please ask UCC leaders and for:
1) A formal school-wide communication explaining ownership, governance, and access rights for all tennis courts on UCC property
2) Transparency around who negotiated and approved any agreements with B&R Tennis Club
3) Confirmation that UCC students, families, and alumni have first booking priority over any non-affiliated organization
Facilities that sit on school land and shape student experience should never be governed in silence.
