Term Limits For Congress

The Issue

Congress has become a place for Career Politicians to plant themselves, making a show of accomplishing their Constitutionally mandated role in our Government, but instead working for special interests and partisan divides. Lawmakers are less likely to take risks against special interests and partisanship due to the potential longevity one can assume in Congress.  Currently, there are 12 Representatives & Senators with over 34 years in Congress.

The President of the United States is limited to two terms in office, in an effort to prevent the potential for an authoritarian regime and to keep power with the citizenry, as much as an election can accomplish.  However, Representatives and Senators are not held to the same standard, and the threat of losing their position isn't one.

This petition proposes instituting term limits on Representatives of no more than five terms (total 10 years), and Senators to no more than two terms (total 12 years).  Terms can be non-consecutive, and does not disallow serving in the other chamber for the max terms.  Pensions should also require serving full maximum terms - resigning from a position for higher office disqualifies that person for a Congressional pension.  Lawmakers are more apt to make smart decisions for the Country if they are less worried about long term reelection.
