Demand U.S. Gov’t to Create Monuments to Memorialize Those Lost to American Slavery

The Issue

In order to successfully defeat bigotry and hate, we must promote objective truth and historical facts. We as citizens of the U.S. are a product of a broken educational system, and as a result we have a society that cannot fully grapple with its complicated past. I believe promoting educational resources and allowing for the creation of spaces and memorials that citizens can come and visit not only to gain knowledge on, but also a space where conversations and discussions are also promoted. We as a nation need to have these discussions, so let us start with demanding the government and any agencies that are involved with the maintenance/upkeep of the White House, U.S. Capitol, Washington Monument, etc. should offer their resources to create these spaces of to both educate and memorialize the contributions of African slaves on U.S. society.

Structures like the White House, for example, are typically projected around d the world as a symbol of “freedom” and “democracy”. However, the construction of the White House was mostly done by the of slaves, as with a few other national monuments across D.C. As a society, if we stand for the values of “freedom” and “democracy” we must promote more civil engagement, meaning spreading awareness and informing as many people as possible. On an issue such as racial injustice, we must take proactive moves on multiple fronts to create change for a better future for all people of the U.S.
