Demand Environmental Studies Be Mandatory at All Schools

Demand Environmental Studies Be Mandatory at All Schools
The Issue
PEOPLE ARE SUFFERING. ANIMALS ARE GOING EXTINCT AT A RATE WE’VE NEVER SEEN BEFORE. THE EARTH AND THE LIFE IT HOLDS IS DECAYING. THE ECOSYSTEMS ARE AT THE BRINK OF COLLAPSING.
Although our impacts on the environment are permanent, humans continue to trash, pollute, and destroy the earth. Global warming, climate change, pollution, and so many other man-made disasters are putting BILLIONS of species, as well as HUNDREDS OF MILLIONS of lives in danger. Don’t panic just yet, because Project Ecowise is here to help! It’s time we take accountability for our rash behaviors. We must teach our future generations a lot more about the terrible influence we’ve put on this one and the only habitable planet and help them to create a safer future for everyone. It’s not just us who agree. 80% of American parents wish that schools taught children about environmental issues like climate change, according to an August 2019 NPR/Ipsos poll. Even politicians agree, with two-thirds of Republicans and 9 in 10 Democrats agree that students need to learn about this in school. This needs to be taught in school.
It is imperative for schools in the United States to be required to teach students from K~12 about the environment and sustainable living.
Our plan states that schools will be required to...
- Teach their students SPECIFICALLY about all of the deadly impacts we put on the environment.
- Have their garden and teach students how to plant fruits and vegetables naturally. (if possible)
- Have their compost bin- Did you know that ⅓ of the food we eat, equivalent to 1.3 BILLION tons of food, ends up in the trash globally and that the United States alone spends around 165 BILLION dollars annually just to manage food waste?
Schools have lots of students, meaning that there are lots of food waste. Instead of throwing them in the trash, waiting for it to be burned in the landfill, they can help out the environment by vermicomposting their food scraps. - Bring students to field trips- Field trips can be planting trees and picking up litter in their community. Walking to the destination is highly recommended to reduce the carbon footprint.
- Lots of hands-on activities so students can understand the content fully.
How will this work?
- This will be for Grades K-12 students.
- Students will focus on this during science class once a week.
- Every last Friday of each month will be a day where students pick up litter at their school and communities to help reduce pollution.
- Once the government approves, this will go into effect after the pandemic.
Why does this matter?
Teaching students about human impacts helps them understand the urgency of the issues going on around the globe and how we can help. Children will also be more mindful of the environment.
When people hear about "Environmental Education", they think of climate change, melting ice caps, deforestation, water pollution, air pollution, and so much more, but environmental education isn't just about that. Studies have shown that environmental education not only improves children’s academic achievement, but also their well-being, leadership skills, and meets 21st-century necessities. It provides students engaging lessons about the environment which can be used for all subjects. Not only that, but it also gets children more active, decreasing health risks, and also emphasizes skills required for succeeding in the future world, including questioning, investigating, defining problems, analyzing, understanding, reasoning, developing conclusions, and problem-solving.
We strongly believe that everything begins with education. If children are well educated, they will make the best options that will help save Earth for not only the future but also the present.
