Overfishing is a problem occurring in the world today. Fishermen overfish by using large nets that they drag across the ocean floor which causes lots of damage. 30% of the stocks are considered overfished, 60% is sustainable fishing and 10 % are under the limit (Shark Research 2014). If we continue to fish at the same rate we are fishing at then experts predict that we will be out of seafood by 2050. Overfishing doesn’t only affect the fish, it affects their habitats and other animals that could get caught in the net. Overfishing can also affect the food chain when fishermen target one certain type of fish and there isn’t a lot of them left over for its predators. When things other than the fish are caught that the fishermen don’t want it’s called bycatch. 54 million tons of fish caught that are bycatch is discarded each year.
