Dear Supporters,

Today I sent the below email to NHTSA.  Please call your Congressperson at their Washington, DC office and ask them for an email address so that you can forward this letter to Congress.

-------------------------
Dear Ann Carlson, Acting Administrator, and Otto Matheke III, Director, Office of Vehicle Safety Compliance, NHTSA,

Today it was announced that NHTSA has issued a recall notice to General Motors because the DRLs and headlights may be on at the same time, causing glare.

Astonishingly, NHTSA has not issued any recalls or notices of non-compliance for use of unvetted, unregulated, unapproved, dangerous 6500K LED headlights and LED DRLs.  These flat surface, directed energy, high blue content LED lights inherently emit excessive glare and peak luminance.  Over 30,000 people have signed a change.org petition demanding that NHTSA take action: https://www.change.org/p/u-s-dot-ban-blinding-headlights-and-save-lives

By now you are aware that the FDA is the federal agency assigned by Congress to regulate LED visible radiation and we expect the FDA to issue a ruling on LED regulation soon.  However, NHTSA must not sit back idly and wait for the FDA.  NHTSA must issue notices of non-compliance to the automakers immediately for their unapproved use of LED headlights and DRLs that do not comply with federal safety regulations, including FMVSS-108.

Yes, we know that issuing such a ruling will be a very big deal and will rock the auto industry.  We know this already.  But it was the auto industry's decision to go with the shiny new thing rather than concern themselves with safety that put them into this position.  NHTSA was created by Congress for exactly this purpose, to protect the public from auto industry negligence.  We demand that NHTSA act.

Sincerely,

Mark Baker
