Dear Supporters,

NHTSA just ordered the recall of 727,000 vehicles with headlights that do not comply with FMVSS-108 standards and are too bright.  NHTSA did not address LED headlights in this recall.

This recall gives us a great opportunity.  I already wrote to the NHTSA investigator, Anne Collins, Associate Administrator for Enforcement at NHTSA (anne.collins@dot.gov) to compliment NHTSA on enforcing FMVSS-108, but to also let her know that NHTSA has never approved a flat surface source such as LED for use as a vehicle headlight and that all vehicles with LED headlights must be recalled to protect public safety.  http://www.softlights.org/wp-content/uploads/2022/03/NHTSA-GM-Headlight-Recall.pdf

There are now two types of light sources in this world:  Point sources which measure brightness with luminous intensity in candela, and flat surface sources which measure brightness with luminance in candela per square meter (nits).  NHTSA FMVSS-108 is only applicable to point sources.  NHTSA has no regulations for flat surface sources such as LED, and because of this lack of regulation, all LED headlights are dangerous as well as unapproved.

Please contact Ms. Collins (anne.collins@dot.gov) and let her know.  NHTSA has never approved a flat surface source for a vehicle headlight, that these LED headlights are incredibly dangerous, and that vehicles with LED headlights must be recalled and replaced with point source headlights.
