Dear Supporters,
Today we received a very significant response from the Iowa Department of Transportation. http://www.softlights.org/wp-content/uploads/2022/03/Iowa-DOT-Response-March-10-2022.pdf
As seems to be typical of American bureaucracy, Iowa DOT attempts to ignore the real issue of blinding LED headlights. However, the big positive for us is that NHTSA has confirmed that all LED replacement bulbs illegal. This means that any car or truck that has replaced a tungsten/halogen bulb with an LED conversion kit has illegal headlights and this is true in all 50 US states.
The two NHTSA employees who confirm this are listed here:
Leroy Angeles, Safety Compliance Engineer: leroy.angeles@dot.gov
Claudia Covell, Chief of the Equipment Division: Claudia.covell@dot.gov
You can help our cause by writing an email to both of these regulators and asking them what NHTSA is doing to get these LED headlights off our roads.
What NHTSA failed to do is address the issue of point source versus surface source (e.g. LED) headlights. We have determined that there is perhaps not a single person in the entire US DOT that understands the difference, which is why there are no regulations for LED headlights. To fix this, I have written to US DOT Secretary Pete Buttigieg and notified him of the necessity of training all staff and leadership in the difference a point source and flat surface source light. https://www.softlights.org/wp-content/uploads/2022/03/US-DOT.pdf
