We are approaching March 5th, an “expiration date” that Trump placed on September 5th, 2017 when he called an end to DACA. He left it up to Congress to decide the fate of 700,000 immigrants. But Congress has taken no action as hundreds of unauthorized immigrants watch their futures be ripped away each day. Two federal judges from California and New York have ruled against Trump’s end to DACA and ordered US Customs and Immigration Services to continue accepting permit renewals. This gives us hope but does not erase uncertainty. In many ways, DACA ended the day Trump called an end to the program. Since his announcement around 122 immigrants, each day has had their DACA authorization expire. By March 5th 22,000 immigrants will experience the same unjust reality, unable to apply on time for renewals. After March 5th the number of unprotected DREAMers will rapidly increase. It is estimated that 425 immigrants will lose their permits each day during March and this number will continue to grow afterward. March 5th is not a fixed deadline. DACA recipients, my community, friends, and family have been at risk since September. They stay up at night thinking about tomorrow. They grapple with the idea of abandoning their dreams and being deported. Let’s uplift our vision of a welcoming and just tomorrow for all immigrants. Tomorrow is the future of 122 of our friends and family members. March 5th is to wait until it’s too late. We will not wait and sit around as Congress has done for the past month. Tomorrow is for DREAMers. Thank you for your signature and support. Raise your voices louder. Let’s empower DREAMers because the fight has not ended. We want a clean DREAM act NOW.
