The lights above Maidu skatepark have not been turned on in the evening for about two years. This is after previous decades of use. Nobody who works at the Maidu recreation center seems to know why, or expresses any interest in addressing the issue. I’ve spoken to the parks director and to the maintenance people at Maidu Park, and I have been given different answer as to why the lights are not in use at night. No one seems to prioritize this as an issue which should be corrected.

Many skateboarders, scooter riders, rollerbladers, rollerskaters etc. are missing valuable hours of opportunity to recreate at this facility. The city seems to be unconcerned by the reality that there is no place to practice our crafts during the dark winter months, or the hot summer days when the only time you can safely and comfortably go outside is after sundown. 

To be clear, the basketball courts are always lit up and they are situated directly next to the skatepark. Additionally, the stadium lights over the softball fields and soccer arena are also on when teams need to practice or play their games.

I would like to know why the only lights not on at night are those related to the skating facility? Skateboarding is an Olympic sport at this point. There should be a safe place for all to practice their sports after the sun goes down.

please sign this petition and pass it on to as many people as you can and I will personally hand it to the city council in hopes that enough voices will get the ball rolling on fixing the issue. It may be a non issue to them, but to many, it will provide a much needed place to practice their passions after dark.
