Turn Off City Lights in Zürich on January 1st

The Issue

Growing up in Zürich, the stars held a magical allure that always filled me with wonder. With friends and family, I spent many evenings pointing out constellations and marveling at the beauty of our universe. But today, this magic has been dimmed by the ever-increasing lights of our modern world. Light pollution has robbed our skies of the twinkling stars, and with it, the simple joy of stargazing. On January 1st, from 10 PM to midnight, I propose we turn off all city lights in Zürich to give residents a chance to reconnect with the night sky.

Zurich is renowned for its commitment to sustainability and innovation. In this spirit, we can take a small but significant step towards addressing the issue of light pollution by darkening our city for just two hours. This initiative can serve as a powerful statement, not only raising awareness about light pollution but also celebrating the natural beauty of our sky. Imagine gathering with friends and loved ones in the stillness, gazing up at a star-filled panorama.

Light pollution does more than just obscure the night sky; it disrupts ecosystems, affects human health, and squanders energy. According to a study published by The Royal Society, artificial lighting at night can interfere with astronomical research and disrupt the biological rhythms of both humans and wildlife.

This brief blackout would not only deepen our understanding and appreciation of the cosmos but also ignite discussions about long-term strategies to reduce light pollution in urban areas. By showing our commitment to this cause, Zürich can lead by example for other cities to follow suit, paving the way for global awareness and action.

Join me in this endeavor to momentarily pause our fast-paced lives and celebrate the natural world above us. Let's make it a night to remember—let’s make it a night under the stars. Please sign this petition to make this vision a reality.
