Thanks to you and thousands of supporters the long-sought High Seas Treaty is about to become international law. 🌊✨
After nearly 20 years of negotiation, and more than 60 countries ratifying this landmark agreement, the High Seas Treaty will legally enter into force on 17 January 2026 - marking the most significant global legal framework ever established to protect biodiversity in international waters.
This treaty finally gives humanity the tools to:
- Create marine protected areas in the high seas, the lungs and circulatory system of our planet’s ocean.
- Require environmental impact assessments for activities beyond national jurisdiction.
- Share benefits from marine genetic resources equitably, including technology and capacity-building support for low-income countries.
And in the final weeks of 2025, Turkey’s Parliament added its voice to this global moment by formally ratifying the agreement - a powerful demonstration of shared responsibility for our blue planet.
To every person who signed, shared, and spoke out: thank you. The high seas are now entering an era of protection, restoration, and shared stewardship and that gives hope not just for marine species, but for climate resilience, food security, and the well-being of billions who depend on healthy oceans.
Here’s to turning the tide for biodiversity and justice. 🌏💙
