For many years, the former President and Deputy Michel Aoun actively undermined Lebanese politics and compromised the dignity and security of the Lebanese people solely to further his own political career and ambitions. His conduct includes, but is not limited to, the following:

  • During the civil war, he provoked numerous smaller conflicts to consolidate and maintain his hold on power.
  • In 1990, he fled the presidential palace, abandoning his soldiers, who were then executed with bullets to the backs of their heads.
  • Upon his return, he negotiated with the very occupying regime responsible for the killings of his own men.
  • He aligned himself with Syria, despite its persistent interference in Lebanese affairs and its responsibility for countless assassinations and car bombings.
  • He forged an alliance with Hezbollah, who under the guise of resistance, effectively held the entire country hostage for decades, forcing countless young Lebanese to emigrate in search of greater stability.
  • He paralyzed the political system, with the help of his allies, to secure the Presidency of the Lebanese Republic.
  • He submitted to the will of Syria and its allies to preserve even a semblance of authority.
  • He repeatedly denied the existence of Lebanese detainees in Syria’s secret prisons, despite substantial evidence to the contrary.
  • He failed to act in good faith regarding the threat posed by ammonium nitrate stored at the port, despite receiving official notification of the danger and admitting his awareness of the risks.
  • He misappropriated public funds and transferred them abroad.
  • He committed countless other transgressions, placing both Lebanon and its citizens at grave risk.

Although we direct this petition to the Lebanese judiciary, we recognize that, owing to entrenched clientelism and years of mutual coercion, a fair outcome may be elusive. Nevertheless, this petition shall serve as a beacon, illuminating for the entire world the true will of the Lebanese people.
