Trump Ties Shutdown to Voting Restrictions. Americans Need to Push Back.
The Issue
Americans are being caught in the middle of a political standoff.
Right now, TSA workers are going unpaid. Travelers are stuck in hours-long lines. Airports are warning of worsening delays and even potential closures.
And instead of resolving the crisis, President Trump has told lawmakers to walk away from negotiations.
Why?
To force through a voting bill.
The legislation at the center of this standoff is what Trump calls the SAVE Act. It would require proof of citizenship to register to vote and stricter identification requirements at the polls. Supporters say it is necessary to prevent voter fraud. Critics argue that voter fraud is already extremely rare and that such requirements could make it harder for eligible Americans to vote, particularly those who may not have easy access to documentation.
This debate is important.
But it should happen openly and on its own.
Instead, the current strategy ties this voting legislation to a government shutdown, using funding for national security and essential services as leverage. That means the longer the shutdown continues, the more pressure builds to accept the bill.
This raises serious concerns.
Government shutdowns affect real people. Workers lose paychecks. Families struggle to cover basic expenses. Public services are disrupted. These situations are not abstract political tools, they have immediate and real consequences.
At the same time, laws that shape how Americans vote should be considered carefully, transparently, and independently, not pushed forward during a crisis.
We are calling on President Trump and Congress to separate these issues immediately.
End the shutdown without conditions tied to unrelated legislation. Ensure federal workers are paid and essential services are restored. Then allow any proposed voting changes to be debated through a full, transparent legislative process.
Democracy depends on both a functioning government and fair access to voting.
Using one to force the other puts both at risk.
The American people should not be used as leverage.
