Trump Is Using the Presidency to Make His Family Rich. Demand Congress Close the Loophole.
The Issue
For decades, presidents avoided even the appearance of profiting from office. Harry Truman refused to lend his name to any business. George W. Bush sold his stock holdings before taking office. The line between public service and private gain was considered sacred.
Trump has erased it.
Since returning to the White House, Trump's net worth has soared 60%, from roughly $4 billion to $6.3 billion. His sons have struck eight foreign real estate deals in just over a year, in Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Vietnam and beyond. Those same countries received policy favors shortly after. Qatar got access to advanced US technology. Vietnam got tariff relief. Saudi Arabia got fighter jets.
The Trump family also controls a cryptocurrency business that has pulled in billions of dollars from foreign investors, including a UAE government-linked company that paid $500 million for a stake days before Trump's inauguration. Shortly after, the administration reversed a Biden-era restriction and gave the UAE access to advanced US chips.
None of this is technically illegal. That is the problem.
The president is exempt from the federal conflict of interest laws that apply to every other government official. That loophole was never meant to be used like this. Congress must close it now, before Trump normalizes a level of self-enrichment that future presidents will feel free to copy.
Public office is not a business opportunity. Sign this petition and tell Congress to pass real conflict of interest laws that apply to the president.
