Truly Keep Digital Content You Paid For!
Truly Keep Digital Content You Paid For!
The Issue
You’ve probably already paid for something you don’t actually own!
When you “buy” a digital product on platforms like Steam, Nintendo, or Sony Playstation, you’re often not buying a product—you’re buying a temporary license...
That means:
-Your purchases can be removed without warning
-You cannot transfer, or truly keep what you paid for
-When a generation of tech changes, your purchases are eventually unavailable due to that particular market no longer being accessible. Currently, technically, you are not allowed to "back-up" digital content you've lawfully paid for in case of such emergencies, so you cannot ensure your content remains in your hard earned library if you so choose.
So at any moment, something you spent real money on can simply be taken away. This isn’t ownership. It’s controlled access, disguised as a purchase.
Why this should matter to you:
If companies can redefine “buying” to mean “renting,” then anything digital—games, books, movies, software—can be taken from you at any time. This sets a dangerous precedent for all consumers.
We are calling on lawmakers to protect basic consumer rights in the digital marketplace.
We demand laws/regulations to better protect our hard earned purchases!
Real Ownership:
If a product is sold as a purchase, it must grant permanent, irrevocable access (unless unlawfully aquired of course)
Honest Terms:
Rentals and subscriptions must be clearly labeled—and cannot simply be replaced by the option to buy after these laws/regulations are set in place, as to keep companies from slipping around our rights!
No Loopholes:
An added layer to the prior point, companies cannot avoid ownership laws by removing purchase options entirely for traditionally purchasable products. (There should be an option to either buy and/or rent. It's only fair.)
Your Purchases Are Yours:
The right to download, back up, and retain access to your paid for digital product should remain yours (unless lawfully revoked)
Fair Protection:
Loss of access requires fair compensation. If we pay for it, we should own it. No hidden conditions. No disappearing purchases!
Sign this petition to protect your digital rights—before ownership disappears completely.
