Tristan’s Law: End Distracted Driving Now

Tristan’s Law: End Distracted Driving Now
The Issue
My nephew Tristan was killed by a distracted driver on his way to get a haircut. One moment on a phone stole his future and shattered our family's lives forever. No parent, aunt, or sibling should have to bury a child because of a text or scroll. I’m fighting for Tristan’s Law so no other family has to live this pain. His name deserves to stand for saving lives.
Every year, distracted driving shatters thousands of lives. In 2023 alone, more than 3,300 people in the U.S. were killed in crashes involving distracted drivers (NHTSA). These aren’t just numbers. They are sons, daughters, parents, siblings, and friends who never made it home.
The sad truth is that we already know the leading culprit: cell phones. Too many drivers believe a quick text or scroll is harmless, but the reality is that it can cost lives. And while awareness campaigns have helped, the deaths continue year after year. Voluntary “Do Not Disturb While Driving” features exist, but they’re optional — and they’re not enough.
A Common-Sense Solution
We already require seatbelts, airbags, and even backup cameras by law. Cars will not start unless the driver is buckled in. Phones and smartwatches can already detect when we are walking, running, sitting, or standing still. The technology exists.
That’s why we are advocating for Tristan’s Law — a requirement for a Driver Lockout Mode on phones:
While a vehicle is in motion, the driver’s phone would disable distracting apps like texting, browsing, and social media.
GPS navigation and hands-free calls/texts would remain available for safety.
Passengers could bypass the lockout through quick verification, so the system wouldn’t penalize them.
This simple measure would prevent countless crashes, injuries, and deaths.
Why This Matters!
No text. No scroll. No notification is worth a life. Distracted driving is not just a personal choice — it’s a public safety crisis. Families like mine live with the consequences every single day.
By supporting this petition, you are helping to:
Show Apple, Google, and Samsung that the public demands safer technology.
Encourage lawmakers, starting in Kentucky, to adopt legislation that makes distracted driving lockout technology a requirement.
Honor Tristan’s life and the lives of thousands of others taken far too soon.
We are asking for your voice. Please sign and share this petition to demand action from tech companies, automakers, and policymakers. Together, we can turn grief into change and save countless lives on the road.
Tristan’s memory will live on — not just in our hearts, but in the lives saved by this change.
