According to the Irish Times article "How Erwin Schrödinger indulged his ‘Lolita complex’ in Ireland" (https://www.irishtimes.com/life-and-style/people/how-erwin-schrödinger-indulged-his-lolita-complex-in-ireland-1.4749204 , Erwin Schrodinger groomed several young girls. When he was 39 years old, he began tutoring, and then abusing, a 14 year old girl. By the time it ended, she was 17, pregnant, and had to have an abortion. It went wrong, and she was left sterilised; however, Schrodinger had moved on to his next victim. He was 25 years older than her.
Schrodinger's rationalisation for his attraction to children was bound up in sexism. He wrote: "... it seems to be the usual thing that men of strong, genuine intellectuality are immensely attracted only by women who, forming the very beginning of the intellectual series, are as nearly connected to the preferred springs of nature as they themselves. Nothing intermediate will do, since no woman will ever approach nearer to genius by intellectual education than some unintellectuals do by birth so to speak."
We can acknowledge the great mark Schrodinger has left on science through our study, and this petition does not wish to diminish the impact his lectures or ideas had in physics. However, it seems in bad taste that a modern college such as Trinity-- one that holds lectures to both men and women, one that (hopefully) rejects the abuse of women, of young girls or, indeed, of anyone-- would honour this man with an entire building. The School of Physics is, and always should be, a welcoming, inclusive place of learning. Who we choose to honour our places of study should reflect that.
