His Worship Raymond Tim Kee has just announced his intention to resign as Port of Spain Mayor. This is truly an unprecedented milestone in our nation's history and a testament to the power of collective action. We would like to thank the 10 000+ people who signed our petition and all those who showed up yesterday at Woodford Sq. to stand in solidarity with Asami Nagakiya and ALL WOMEN who have been blamed for their own victimisation. We also hope that this occasion has left no doubt in the mind of our nation's leaders that a Gender Policy is needed to provide clear guidelines that protect women and other vulnerable groups from Gender Based Violence. Mayor Tim Kee's resignation has restored some level of the people's faith in local government and sends a message to those others in office who hold similar views to re think their position. It is unfortunate that after Prime Minister Keith Rowley's decision to include the Gender Division within his own Office, has been apathetic toward the very direct implications of the policing of women's bodies and victim shaming inherent in the Mayor's utterances. We demand that our leaders take responsibility for the safety of ALL citizens and those within our borders. We hope that this victory honours the life of Asami and brings comfort to her family and loved ones in some small way. POWER TO THE PEOPLE!!!
