The Issue
Trying to cross the intersection of Hayes Road and Mentmore Avenue is a dangerous gamble. While the City of Sydney claims their historical data shows only one recorded incident between 2020 and 2024, local residents know the terrifying reality. This intersection is a notorious black spot for unreported near-misses, minor collisions, and structural traffic gridlock.

The crisis point was officially reached today (26 June 2026) with two separate, severe multi-car crashes in a single day—one at 6:55 AM and another at 3:30 PM. Both incidents required emergency services to attend and resulted in all vehicles being towed.

The pressure on Hayes Road has reached a catastrophic breaking point following the closure of Primrose Avenue's exit to Gardeners Road, downstream bottlenecks at Dalmeny Avenue, and massive commercial growth (the opening of Aldi in February 2023 and The Engine Yards in July 2024). This has resulted in severe collisions, including an overturned van, vehicles crashing near the local corner childcare centre, and most recently, a young child on a scooter being struck by a vehicle on Hayes Road.

With zero traffic control for cars speeding down Hayes Road, pedestrians—including parents with prams from the local childcare centre and crowds moving between The Engine Yards and The Cannery—are routinely left stranded on the kerb, risking their lives. We cannot wait for a pedestrian fatality for Council to admit their data is flawed.

The Under-Utilised Asset: The Empty Bus Lane
During our review of local traffic infrastructure, we identified a glaring inefficiency. There is an exclusive right-hand turning lane from Gardeners Road onto Botany Road marked strictly for buses.
However, a review of the current public transport network confirms that no standard timetabled public bus routes utilize this right-turn lane. Major services like the 358 route travel straight across along Gardeners Road without making this turn. This critical lane is sitting completely empty and under-utilised every single day, while frustrated, gridlocked drivers are actively pushed into narrow local streets to find a way through.

What We Are Demanding: 

We call on the City of Sydney to urgently upgrade this intersection during the upcoming next financial year works by installing:

• A  raised pedestrian crosswalk (Wombat crossing) connecting The Engine Yards and The Cannery.
• The planned raingardens and kerb extensions integrated simultaneously to maximize safety impact.
• Traffic Calming measures down along Hayes Road to reduce the speeding vehicles.
• Reinstate the Right Hand Turn Lane from Gardeners Road to Botany Road for vehicles travelling westbound.
