Don't close Caledonian Road tube station for 8 months.

The Issue

Transport for London's plan to close Caledonian Road Underground Station for eight months from March 14th 2016 to replace the station’s two lifts has been withdrawn - for now.

This petition's aim is to persuade London Mayor Boris Johnson and Transport for London to replace the lifts without closing the station.  Feasibility studies have shown that this can be done.

Increasing passenger numbers mean that three or four lifts would be desirable and possible - the lift shafts are already in place - but two modern, faster,  more reliable lifts could satisfy demand for the time being.

Six million journeys a year start or end at Caledonian Road Station including many by people with disabilities, students, residents, theatre goers and business people.  Four million journeys would be disrupted by an eight month closure and lift replacement programme.  The equivalent of 100 extra full buses along Caledonian Road, each way, every weekday would be required just to meet the needs of passengers going in and out of Central London.

Following the threat of a Judicial Review from Islington Council, TfL has agreed to halt its closure plan and reconsider its options.  Replacing the lifts one at a time while the station remains open is the option we are campaigning for.  This has been done elsewhere.

We call on Transport for London and London Mayor, Boris Johnson to do the right thing - replace the obsolete lifts one at a time while the station remains open.

Please sign and share this petition and help make sure the station doesn’t close.

No station closure. You know it makes sense.

Responded
Dear Petitioners As you are aware, since our original response to this petition was posted, Transport for London (TfL) has now withdrawn its decision to begin lift works at Caledonian Road station from 14 March. Everyone agrees that substantial work on these old assets needs to be carried out. TfL is now reconsidering how to refurbish the lifts both safely and with as little disruption as possible. TfL is currently carrying out an equality impact assessment and a quantified risk assessment of the range of options for the work. TfL will announce its decision on this in due course. Yours sincerely Public Liaison Officer Greater London Authority
