Mayor of London, Boris Johnson, responded to the Caledonian Station petition today. His letter was taken word for word from Transport for London's response of two months ago. Boris has ignored our plea to keep the station open. He has ignored seven thousand station users and has just said, "Yes" to whatever his office staff told him. This is not good enough. It has emerged that TfL engineers have considered the option of replacing the existing lifts one at a time and keeping the station open. This would take longer than fixing the two at once, but it could be done and the extra cost would not be significant. This option should be offered now. TfL can change its plans - it has already put back the start of the work to March, when Tufnell Park Station is due to reopen. If the lifts are replaced one by one, engineers will already be on site if the remaining lift fails, so down time should be short. Closure of the station will put the equivalent of ninety full buses onto Caledonian Road every day, both ways, just to cater for passengers who will have to head for King's Cross - and London Underground will have to pay for this. There is still no agreement with 'Surface Transport' (i.e. London Buses) on how many extra buses will be provided. Come on Boris - there is still time to do the right thing. Ask your engineers to dust off their alternative plan. Keep the station open. Nine thousand people a day will thank you.
