Transform Schools into Multi-Use Facilities During Holidays

The issue

TLDR

Petition to utilize underused school facilities in Liverpool for cultural, sports, educational, and family events during off-school periods to foster community, support cultural exchange, and generate revenue for schools while saving money on building new facilities.

Description

Our schools in NSW are home to a wide range of amazing infrastructures and spaces that remain untapped during holidays and weekends, which account for around half the year. While these buildings are empty, new communities, like Austral are in need for affordable venues for cultural, sportive, educational and even family events . Schools possess state-of-the-art facilities such as sport halls, large classrooms and meeting areas, and expansive outdoor areas that can be put to use for the benefit of our society during these off-school periods.

According to the Australian Bureau of Statistics, the Liverpool area is a culturally diverse region with people from diverse backgrounds (ABS, 2016). Use of school facilities could encourage positive cultural exchange and mutual understanding within this culturally diverse community, fostering a sense of unity. Furthermore, cost of living has made it harder for people to host fun events which tie the community together. Using schools could use the price. This approach will also be more sustainable, both economically and environmentally, than building new venues. Reutilising schools could save more than 70% of the cost of building new venues.

Moreover, this proposition has the potential to generate huge revenue for schools while still keeping a low price, which could be reinvested into our children's education. In the USA, similar initiatives have been highly successful, with some school districts generating up to 2 million in annual revenues (National Centre for Education Statistics, U.S).

Innovative thinking and adaptive use of infrastructure are needed now more than ever. Let's transform our schools into places that are used a variety of activities and functions. We could use science labs for holiday programs, meeting halls for functions and events such as STEM competitions like the CSIRO STEM Community Partnerships Program and large outdoor areas for sporting events. It is essential we make the most of our infrastructure.

Pilot Program

As a pilot program, we could host a weekly or monthly Monday or Thursday dinner at schools, this could be useful because some areas in NSW have a high Muslim population and it is voluntary for them to fast on Mondays and Thursdays. Also hosting youth basketball competitions as most schools have full sized basketball fields. Additionally, schools have many suitable classrooms to start language classes in the holidays.
