Under the management of Puget Sound Energy (PSE), a privately-held "managed" monopoly, residents in Washington State have endured an era of skyrocketing energy costs. This unacceptable rise in expenses overburdens our families, small businesses, and fixed-income seniors. Despite these challenges, the Washington Utilities and Transportation Commission (UTC), which is responsible for regulating PSE and protecting consumers, seems to be asleep at the wheel.  Recent data indicates energy costs increasing 200-300% in just a handful of years..  

We all rely on PSE for our energy needs, but as a profit-driven entity, PSE's primary focus is on maximizing their investments—often at the expense of ratepayers. In the past decade, we've witnessed numerous rate hikes, with little to no improvement in service. While PSE executives and investors pocket higher profits, ordinary citizens face the brunt of rising living costs. It’s time for a change.

Transforming PSE into a Public Utility District (PUD) is crucial. PUDs are not-for-profit entities owned by the community they serve. This model ensures that all revenues are reinvested into improving infrastructure, maintaining low rates, and delivering reliable energy solutions without the burden of satisfying distant shareholders. Other regions with PUDs have consistently demonstrated lower energy costs and more responsive customer service.

The urgency of this transition is underscored by the pressing need to prioritize renewable energy sources. Publicly managed utilities are more agile and proactive in investing in green technology and reducing our carbon footprint. This approach aligns perfectly with Washington State’s goals for sustainable development and environmental stewardship.

The path forward is clear: Washington State must initiate the process of converting PSE into a Public Utility District. Our communities deserve affordable, clean, and dependable energy. Lower rates, community accountability, and a commitment to renewable energy are pivotal components of a responsible energy future.
