The Issue

I have sensory processing issues and for years, it felt like an uphill battle to get the considerations I needed while attending school in Cambridge, MA. After numerous meetings with the school administration, I finally received permission to wear noise-canceling headphones to help me focus during certain parts of the school day. Despite this approval, many teachers refused to let me use them in their classrooms. Without the headphones, I couldn't endure the noise and distractions, which led me to leave school early almost every day. No child should have to fight this hard for what they need to stay in class and learn.

The stigma surrounding disabilities is pervasive, touching every area of life. It arises from a lack of education and understanding about what disabilities entail. Educational systems in particular fail to adequately prepare students, teachers, and staff to accommodate different needs. Moreover, inaccessible architecture and unequal healthcare further marginalize those with disabilities. When schools don't provide comprehensive education and when architectural barriers prevent access, we are sending a message that disabled lives are less valued.

In Cambridge, we have a unique opportunity to lead by example and shift the paradigm. A critical step is to transform the health curriculum at all educational levels to include accurate, comprehensive, and empathetic instruction about disabilities. Students should learn about various types of disabilities, the challenges faced by those who have them, and how to foster inclusive and supportive environments for everyone. Such education can dismantle stereotypes, promote understanding, and build a more inclusive society.

We propose a revamp of the health curriculum to include modules on invisible and visible disabilities, focusing on the real-life challenges, successes, and contributions of people living with them. This new curriculum should be shaped with input from those who have disabilities, ensuring it reflects genuine experiences and needs.

Imagine a future where every school environment in Cambridge is not just accessible but welcoming to everyone, where students grow up understanding, accepting, and celebrating diversity in all its forms. In this environment, no child—regardless of their disabilities—will be left behind, and everyone can thrive.

Let's take the first step by urging the educational authorities in Cambridge, MA to update and enhance the health education curriculum. By signing this petition, you can help ensure that all children, no matter their needs, have the opportunity for a fulfilling and barrier-free education.
