Transform bus stop into a memorial for gun violence victims

Transform bus stop into a memorial for gun violence victims
The Issue
We, the undersigned, call upon King County Metro and relevant local authorities to establish a permanent memorial at the bus stop located at Henderson Street and Rainier Avenue in Seattle, where two Rainier Beach High School students, Tyjon Stewart and Traveiah Houfmuse, tragically lost their lives, while attempting to get on the bus after school on January 30, 2026.
In the wake of this tragic event, our community is faced with an opportunity to honor the lives lost and to remind ourselves of the urgent need to address gun violence. This senseless act of violence has left an indelible mark on their families, friends, and the community at large. It is time for us to come together and create a lasting tribute in their memory.
Transforming this bus stop into a permanent memorial will serve not only as a tribute to Traveiah and Tyjon, but as a powerful reminder of the aims we must pursue: reducing gun violence and increasing safety within our neighborhood. A memorial would offer family and community members a sacred space to mourn, reflect, and find solace.
To support this initiative, we propose working in partnership with local government bodies, the families affected, artists, and community leaders. Together, we can design a site that is respectful, educational, and engaging. The memorial would include a bench, plaques with the names of the victims, personal stories, and messages of peace, as well as art installations to evoke contemplation and community interaction.
This memorial will serve as a lasting place of reflection and healing for our entire community, honoring the memory of Traveiah and Tyjon and supporting the many who will forever be changed by this tragedy. In addition, it will show we are committed to advocating for a safer tomorrow for our children. Implementing educational programs focused on gun safety and community outreach events can elevate awareness and get more individuals involved in making a difference.
We must act now to bring healing and awareness. Sign this petition to urge local leaders to support the construction of a permanent memorial at this bus stop. Together, let us honor the victims and fight for a future free from the threat of gun violence. Your voice matters.
