Transfer this elephant into the custody of Kerala Forest Department

The Issue

This video shows the cruel tricks applied by mahouts to control elephant Thiruvegapura Rudra inside Vayalasery Temple on 24th Feb. These cruel tricks are violations of prention of cruelty to animals act 1960. These cruel tricks were applied at this elephant just before the eyes of police and forest officials inside that temple.

This complaint related to the parading of one Elephant with three names. The actual name of the Elephant is Thiruvegapura Rudran. This Elephant was belonged to one priest residing at Thiruvegapura. He lead a profession of predicting the future of people by using betal leaves. As this Elephant was not co-operative with mahouts, he transferred it to a person residing at Pananchery in Thrissur district. On 19th February 2016, this Elephant illegally paraded at Thundath Bhagavathi Temple near Peechi ran amok and created panic among people who gathered at the festival ground. Then this Elephant was illegally paraded at Vayalassery Temple near Nilamboor in Malappuram District on 24th February. This Elephant ran amok at that temple for three hours. Then on 28th February this Elephant was illegally paraded at Chorottoor Kurumba Bhagavathy Temple and ran amok for three hours. At Thundath Bhagavathi Temple, the name of the Elephant was given as Pananchery Kesavan. At Vayalassery Bhagavathi Temple, the name of this Elephant was mentioned as Palakkad Sanakaranarayanan. At Chorottoor Kurumba Bhagavathi Temple, name of this Elephant was mentioned as Palakkad Sankaranarayanan. At all these three places, the forest officials had not visited the place of festival. Even after our complaint in this respect was registered at the Wildlife intelligence wing of Kerala Forest Department on these three days, the flying squad wing of Kerala Forest Department had not initiated any enquiry into this type of misrepresentation of one Elephant with three names. This type of parading one Elephant at different names is an offence as per the Elephant parade rules of Kerala. We know these three incidents the Elephant had carried three persons atop for hours during its misbehavior. I expect that your authoritative office will conduct a high level enquiry into these three incidents and order for seizure of this Elephant into the custody of Kerala Forest Department as early as possible..
