The Issue

Chronic back pain has been a burdensome part of my life, and like many other Canadians, I desperately search for relief beyond traditional methods. Unfortunately, one promising solution - Artificial Disc Replacement (ADR) surgery - is conspicuously unavailable in Canada due to the absence of training among our spine surgeons. This means we often have to consider costly and uncertain options abroad, facing additional burdens and unnecessary challenges.

Artificial Disc Replacement is a transformative surgical intervention that replaces a damaged spinal disc with a prosthetic one(titanium), allowing for a greater range of motion and significant pain reduction compared to spinal fusion.  It is widely practiced in many European countries and some US states, offering patients an alternative that could significantly improve their quality of life. Yet, our Canadian health system doesn’t currently support this innovation, leaving many of us without access to a medical advancement that could alleviate our suffering.

Training spine surgeons in Canada to perform ADR could significantly reduce treatment wait times, lower out-of-country healthcare costs for patients, and ensure Canadians receive cutting-edge treatments without needing to leave the country. It represents a progressive step forward in modernizing our healthcare system to meet the needs of all patients, including those battling relentless back pain.

I call on the Canadian Ministry of Health and the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada to prioritize the development and implementation of training programs for ADR. By investing in the training of our physicians and expanding the skill set required for this surgery, we can provide much-needed relief to countless Canadians suffering from chronic back conditions.

The time has come to embrace this medical innovation and lift the heavy burden of back pain for Canadians. Please sign this petition to advocate for the training needed to make Artificial Disc Replacement surgery widely available in Canada.
