Tragic Death of Bangladeshi Student Raises Safety Concerns: Are we even Safe at Home???

The issue

We are deeply concerned about the recent increase in crime and vandalization in Northern Territory, culminating in the brutal attack on a Bangladeshi international student studying at Charles Darwin University who's been in ICU and fought for life. After being heavily assaulted by an intruder, he fought bravely in the ICU but sadly surrendered to his injuries at 4:35 PM on 4 May 2023. This young boy came here to Darwin with lots of hopes and dreams.

Will parents feel safe sending their kids here in the territory to live/study/work?

Are we safe at home, at work, and on the roads?

The incident has traumatized the whole community, and we are worried about our safety and security. We need the government and local leaders to work together to ensure the safety of their citizens, and we are calling for immediate action to be taken to address this issue. We cannot continue to live in fear and uncertainty and want immediate action and support.

We call upon the government and local leaders to work together with the police and justice system to address the issue and take the following steps:

  1. Safer accommodation.
  2. Safer public transport system, deploy more transit officers on the road for safer movement for travelers.
  3. Increase police presence and patrols in residential areas, shops, and public areas to deter criminal activity.
  4. Cover more areas under live surveillance to detect threats and prompt action where necessary.
  5. Provide support to victims of crime, including counselling and financial assistance.
  6. Educate the community about the impact of crime and the importance of reporting suspicious behaviour.
  7. Increase resources and funding for community-based programs that address the root causes of crime, such as poverty, substance abuse, and mental health issues.
