Following discussions earlier this week with the Save George Carnall Group I wanted to provide an update for the community on the latest position surrounding George H. The Council has, since the change of administration, reviewed in full the proposals for George Carnall and the development put forward to be completed in partnership with Equity Solutions. We have some concerns that this may not be the best proposal for future use of the site and have advised Equity that we will not be moving forward as previously planned. Our next steps will be to work with the Save George Carnall Group to look at the financial situation surrounding George Carnall and Urmston leisure centres in detail, both to understand the viability of George Carnall as a leisure facility and the extent to which the business case around the redevelopment of Urmston Leisure Centre is dependent on the closure of George Carnall to drive future business. The licence for the Manchester Giants to play basketball at GHC is unaffected by this, and is already signed off and completed.
Once this piece of work around the financing is done, if a decision is made that some alternative use of the site is to be taken forward the Council will follow a formal tendering process inviting any interested party to put forward a proposal for that future use. There does not appear to have been a formal process to do this previously and any proposals will be put to the community for full consultation before being adopted by the Council.
In addition residents should be aware that George Carnall will remain open as a fully functioning leisure centre until December 2019 at the earliest, pending the outcome of these future discussion between the Council, partners and the Save George Carnall Group.
