Matthew Pierce started this petition to Town of Salem NH Zoning Board and

This petition is seeking to amend zoning guidelines currently in place in order to expand accessibility of raising chickens in Salem, NH.

At this time, the ability to raise backyard hens is limited to rural zoning with a minimum of 1 acre of land, per 6 hens.  Hens are not permitted in the residential zone regardless of acreage.  A proposed change to this rule would allow for a maximum of 6 hens in rural and residential zoned properties of 0.25 acres or greater.

Some benefits include the availability of fresh eggs, educational opportunities for families (especially to those with children), as well as contributing greatly to a self sufficient sustainable backyard permaculture.  Chickens are great composters of kitchen scraps and keep the tick population in check.  The advantages to raising chickens far outweigh the disadvantages.

As the importance of sustainable local food systems become headline news, so does the desire for backyard chicken coops. Please support a change in the zoning rules for backyard hens in Salem, NH.
