We have won a partial victory in our battle to stop Sainsbury’s and Save Whitechapel – developers have accepted a reduction in the tower height from 33 to seven stories. Stopping this enormous tower will mean that daylight is no longer blocked to hundreds of surrounding homes and businesses, who will also no longer be overlooked. It also removes the negative impact on the setting of the Trinity Almshouses – a major and welcome improvement that respects the nationally significant historic environment of Whitechapel. However, the key aspect of affordable housing has unfortunately not been addressed - this has been increased by a mere 1.5% to 17.5%, far below the Council’s targets of 35-50% to align with the London Plan. We need to encourage the developers and council to address the final matter of affordable housing – and insist that they increase this to at least meet the council’s targets of 35%. Every objection letter or comment to this new application will help put pressure on Sainsbury’s to increase the affordable housing and help deliver more affordable homes for Whitechapel. Please send your objections to Tower Hamlets Council dr.developmentcontrol@towerhamlets.gov.uk (quoting ref:PA/17/01920/A1) Kind regards, #StopSainsburysSaveWhitechapel
