Last night Sainsbury's suffered a massive defeat. Tower Hamlets strategic planning members voted unanimously to reject the application for damaging heritage, overshadowing local residents, harming local small businesses and not providing enough affordable housing.
This is a huge victory for the many, many people who all played an integral part in bringing about this defeat.
It is a result of the 5,463 people who have signed this petition, the 464 people who joined as 'Friends of Trinity Green' and the 246 members of the public who wrote to the council.
It is a result of the many heritage bodies and campaign groups who furiously opposed the scheme, including The Spitalfields Trust, Historic England, The Society for the Protection of Ancient Buildings, SAVE Britain’s Heritage, the East End Preservation Society, the Georgian Group, the Victorian Society, the Temple Trust and the Skyline Campaign.
Sainsbury’s had a fantastic opportunity to deliver affordable housing, jobs and regeneration to Whitechapel whilst celebrating and being sensitive to its diverse, rich and ever changing character.
Sainsbury’s could have designed a development that respected the conservation areas, including Trinity Green, provided more affordable housing and had less impact on local residents and businesses.
However, they did not do so.
We now hope to encourage Sainsbury's to revise their scheme, addressing the points raised to deliver a development worthy of East London's unique, diverse and spirited community.
