Although the architects BuckleyGrayYeoman say they are submitting revised plans for the Wickhams development the case officer at Tower Hamlets Council has not yet heard anything officially. He has promised to email me when he receives once we receive the amended plans. There will also be a further round of public consultation on the amendments.
I asked him about listing the entire frontage to secure the future of the 'best visual joke in London'. He said:
"As to the listing, statutory listing would be a matter for Historic England (formerly English Heritage), this I find highly unlikely. As to the local listing, I do feel that this would be of little benefit although such a decision is not within my prerogative. "
But he kindly gave me the name of a colleague who would look into listing. It seems to me that the inclusion of the first floor facade of Spiegelhalters in the revised scheme is a good thing, although the ground floor entrance and interior treatment may not be appropriate (given earlier proposals for oxidised metal shards and so on).
My two penn'orth? How about a glazed ground floor entrance beneath the original brick and stucco facade, on which could be engraved the photographic image of the Spiegelhalter shop in its heyday (an image you can find online). Suitably lit it would be a spectral presence - one would enter the new development through the ghost of the original shop. I think that would be beautiful, achievable and a crowd-puller. It retains, explores and extends the original stand-off between Wickhams and the Spiegelhalters and would be unique. The technology exists (and some thought should be given to appropriate lighting to create a 'ghostly' effect.
What do you think?
