Vote NO to ‘NO PLAN’ … A PILOT PROJECT THAT WAS NEVER GIVEN A CHANCE TO SUCCEED

On June 2, 2020, Mayor John Tory and Councillor Ana Bailão announced that the City had selected 150 Harrison St (at Dundas & Dovercourt) as a ‘modular home pilot project’ to build 44 bachelor rental units and support services. The proposal is one of the very first initiatives under the City’s HousingTO 2020-2030 Action Plan to put in place 40,000 new affordable rental units over the next decade.

The problem however is that there is NO PLAN in place, there has been NO DEMOCRACTIC PROCESS followed, there has been NO COMMUNITY CONSULTATION and the timeline to completion of the project is unprecedented - 12 weeks from the beginning of construction in July 2020 to tenants in place by September 2020. This sets a dangerous precedent for all the Wards of Toronto given the City’s plan to put in place 40,000 new affordable rental units across the city over the next decade.

To be clear, the local community surrounding 150 Harrison St. want to be part of a housing affordability initiative that will be a success story. In fact, a previous proposed initiative with similar density had the support of the community. This newly proposed modular home pilot project has not been given a chance to succeed given there is NO PLAN…

ARE YOU OK WITH ‘NO PLAN’?

How could this pilot project possibly be a success given it is a …

• 35+ year pilot project with NO Plan?
• 35+ year pilot project with NO Secured Funding?
• 35+ year pilot project with NO Budget?
• 35+ year pilot project with NO Studies?
• 35+ year pilot project with NO Identified Services?
• 35+ year pilot project with NO Community Involvement?
• 35+ year pilot project with NO Due Process?

CITY COUNIL VOTE ON JUNE 29

City Council are scheduled to vote on the proposal at the upcoming City Council meeting on June 29. The unfortunate irony is that a ‘yes’ vote in the supposed interest of achieving housing affordability in Toronto will directly lead to the failure of the proposed development which will only derail the HousingTO 2020-2030 Action Plan before it has even begun…

We are asking all Councillors to vote NO to ‘NO PLAN’ in order to allow time for proper community consultation and due process in order to make the project at 150 Harrison St a success story that can be used as a showcase for similar projects.

If you have questions or concerns due to the lack of due process, zero community consultation and a development with NO PLAN please join our Facebook group at VOTE NO to 'NO PLAN' and sign this petition. You can take action NOW!
