Why this petition matters

Started by Hector Catre

Toronto's Dundas St was named for someone that had very little to do with Toronto, and has been found to have ties with slavery. This street should be renamed.

Historically, streets in Toronto have been named after a long list of people, some of whom were the original property owners. Some of these people were politicians. Other streets are named after people of notoriety.

The naming of a street should be considered an honour. A name of a street should inspire. A great name should make people say: "Yes, I want to live on or near that street". Realtors will tell you that a name of a street can impact the desirability of an address as there is literal value of a well named street.

We who have signed this petition believe that in our modern era, there is no other person of note whose influence inspires us more than Terry Fox. His sacrifice to a cause that we're all unified in saying is worthy of fighting, strikes the hearts of all Canadians, and has even been known to impact people in other countries as well.

We who have signed this petition implore and request that Toronto City Council consider renaming Dundas Street to honour Terry Fox.
