Yesterday the BBC announced some more details about their plans to take BBC3 off our television screens and to replace it with a BBC1+1 yesterday morning. Shortly after the announcement I spoke to the BBC to put some of your questions and views to them.
We still do not know what programmes will remain on an online BBC3 and what will move to other BBC channels. The bosses say no decisions have been made - so will we see In The Flesh, Family Guy, American Dad, Hotel Of Mum and Dad, Our War, or even festival coverage of Reading and Leeds or Glastonbury on terrestrial television in the future? No one has provided a commitment about what will stay. What they have told us is more content will be shorter videos and not 30 or 60 minute programmes as it strives to make £25m worth of cuts. The media reports that Don't Tell The Bride will be one of the first casualties, along with some of the viewers too, as not everyone across the UK will have the technology to access it online.
Previous reports from the BBC Trust have praised BBC3 for being more young and diverse than any other BBC channel - so why allow audiences to disappear to other stations like E4, Sky, or ITV2? And what happens if the audience doesn't take to BBC3 online - do they scrap providing content for young adults altogether?
This campaign is far from over - it's entering a new stage. Over 265,000 have signed our petition and it's still growing. The BBC Trust will have the final say, and based on the strength of the petition they've agreed to run a public consultation so you can email in your views from January.
