Have you signed the final BBC3 consultation yet? http://bit.ly/1K8jtqf. This is *extra* to the petition. Add an icon to your profile picture too - http://bit.ly/1KDpwW1. Why we're writing today is because of Professor Brian Cox's comments on Monday. His speech alongside the BBC Director General was well-received, but it couldn't have gone unnoticed his message that claimed "TV is still the most powerful medium for inspiring and influencing young people".
To us it summed up perfectly the argument about keeping BBC3 on TV over online-only. As it was said by a big name at the BBC we think it's important to share - https://twitter.com/SaveBBCThree/status/641289263359881216. The BBC must have took note as it's the one quote they picked out on their social media accounts, so why haven't they realised the link to their BBC3 plans?
I love the BBC but even the biggest supporters of the BBC are left scratching their heads over the announcements being made by the bosses at the corporation. For example just this week the Director General announced he wants new services for North Korea and Russia, and a new music streaming service to rival Spotify. All commendable, but these investments are being announced while arguing for closure of distinctive TV services in the UK.
With the BBC3 decision they admit in their plans it's not about the viewing habits of young people that is the reason for closing BBC3 on TV. No, that argument doesn't stack up as they know it'll lose viewers. The bosses admit the "key reason" is an ambition to spend every penny saved from moving it online on more mainstream BBC1 shows. That's the same BBC1 that has been criticised by the BBC Trust for not reaching enough young people, or those from diverse backgrounds, and we know is already significantly funded by public money.
Professor Brian Cox is right about the power of TV. And BBC3 is exactly the distinctive sort of TV service that does influence and inspire young people. Just like a public service should. And it's universally available. While BBC1 has so much competition, what does BBC3 compete with on TV? ITV2 and E4 don't even compare. BBC3 is an area to nurture new talent, for award-winning drama and risk-taking comedy, and the home to live debate and so many unique documentaries that gained heaps of praise this year alone. We'd never have seen this all happen if left to BBC One or Two, yet it's being cut. And with a smaller audience online the BBC may stop serving us altogether.
So whether you agree or not the future of broadcasting is going to be solely online, we can all the arguments in these proposals don't stack up, and that there must be appropriate safeguards in place. So please read what we have to say on our website and then sign the consultation *in addition* to the petition - http://bit.ly/1K8jtqf.
