The next time I write to you the BBC Trust will have made their initial recommendation on the BBC’s plans to take the BBC3 off TV. The decision will come this week – 18 months after the Director General announced his plans.
We’re just 4,210 names off reaching 300,000 signatures on our petition.
Can we get there? Please take a couple of minutes today sharing the link on Twitter, Facebook, and by email. If you use any other social network do it there too!
Share it with your friends, your family, your work colleagues, your class mates. Tweet it at your favourite celebrities too asking them to sign and retweet: www.change.org/savebbc3
Once you’ve done that there are further steps you can take. You can share our campaign video. You can email Rona Fairhead at the BBC Trust. You can also send an actual free postal letter from your computer to John Whittingdale MP – the Government Minister in charge of Media – who also oversees the deep cuts to the BBC. See how to do all this here: www.savebbc3.com/petition
Finally, you can tweet the BBC Trust - copying in the BBC - putting on the pressure. Just click here to do so – http://ctt.ec/7CZdu
Once the BBC Trust makes its initial recommendation this week there will be another 28-day consultation where we’ll need you all to send in your views once more. We hope the Trust this time will make it accessible to young people as possible. A final decision will then come in September, with the possibility of closure in January.
We’re not just doing this for ourselves. This is about stopping the huge 50% programming budget cuts for BBC3 which will impact on future generations of young people. The average age for viewers of BBC1, 2 and 4 is 60. It’s only BBC3 that reaches out to both a diverse and much younger audience, and yet the BBC are pressing ahead with plans even BBC bosses admit will lose them viewers. I believe the BBC can still make further savings before they consider closing channels.
So let’s get the petition to 300,000! Let’s keep up the pressure on the BBC and BBC Trust. Let’s Save BBC3.
